WHERE FOLK MUSIC MET
ARTILLERY FIRE

Between 1991 and 2001, the dissolution of Yugoslavia produced not only Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II — it produced some of the strangest, most surreal music the world has ever heard. Turbo-folk anthems pounded through the speakers of tanks. Soldiers recorded music videos in combat fatigues between firefights. Accordion-driven ballads celebrated specific military units by name.

This archive documents the artists, albums, and cultural phenomenon of Balkan war music — the singers, soldiers, and producers who created a soundtrack to one of the most devastating conflicts in modern European history.

People came from russia just to interview me. They looked at me like a miracle.
We were kicked out of our homes. War is a terrible thing. So we started making some songs among ourselves. I wanted to forget those terrible things through music.
The Music

SOUNDTRACK TO
A COLLAPSING STATE

As Yugoslavia fractured along ethnic and national lines, music became a weapon of identity. Every faction produced its own sonic propaganda — a bizarre fusion of folk tradition, electronic production, and wartime bravado that had no real precedent in modern conflict. Cassette tapes circulated through military checkpoints. Radio stations broadcast from besieged cities. Soldiers composed songs in trenches and recorded them in makeshift studios between offensives.

The result was a sprawling, chaotic, and often deeply strange body of work that blurred the lines between entertainment, propaganda, mourning, and genuine artistic expression. These are the genres that defined the era.

TURBO-FOLK

ТУРБО-ФОЛК

The genre that came to define wartime Serbia — a high-energy collision of traditional folk melodies with synthesizers, drum machines, and pop hooks. Born in the late 1980s, turbo-folk became the dominant sound of Belgrade's nightlife even as war raged hours away. Its biggest stars were cultural icons with direct connections to paramilitary figures.

PATRIOTIC ANTHEMS

ПАТРИОТСКЕ ПЕСМЕ

Every side produced stirring, martial anthems celebrating homeland, sacrifice, and national destiny. These ranged from polished studio productions to raw field recordings — some hauntingly beautiful, others nakedly propagandistic. Many invoked centuries-old battles and myths to frame the present conflict.

UNIT & COMMANDER SONGS

ПЕСМЕ ЈЕДИНИЦА

Perhaps the most unusual category: songs written for and about specific military units, brigades, and their commanders. The 204th Brigade, the Panthers, Kozara units — each had their own musical identity. These songs functioned as morale tools, recruitment anthems, and cultural artifacts simultaneously.

Cultural Impact

MUSIC AS WEAPON,
MUSIC AS MOURNING

The wartime music of the Balkans occupies an uncomfortable space in cultural history. It was simultaneously a tool of propaganda and a genuine expression of grief. Soldiers who sang about victory were often the same men who wept over fallen comrades in the next verse. The music was never simple — it carried the full weight of a community in crisis, reflecting pride, fear, defiance, and profound loss in equal measure.

Decades later, these recordings have found unexpected new audiences online. Stripped of their original political context, the songs circulate as internet curiosities, memes, and objects of genuine musical appreciation. The archive below documents the artists at the center of this phenomenon — their stories, their recordings, and their complicated legacies.
